RIANA BREEBAART

Art demands freedom. Let others paint what they choose, compose what they like… Let critics interpret art with every word in the dictionary. But let me work as I must. – Credo of sculptor, Laurika Postma

"And I have, since I was young, had the urge to paint and enjoyed art as a subject throughout my school career. I studied textile design at the University of Technology in Pretoria and received my diploma in 1996.

I became fascinated by cattle, specifically cows which have had the strongest influence on my creativity - these animals with their tender eyes, soft skins, the smooth contours of their anatomy, their calm nature and an almost mystical aura that surrounds them.

In the pursuit of precise portrayal of these animals, my work is realistic but not photo- realistic.

I paint what I love and what I am passionate about and to me it is also interior design.

Light is the most important element in my compositions and the effect it has on colour, which portrays the emotion I felt. It is a still life but when you go there it is no longer “still”…there is life and hope. Each setting sets the stage to create memories; it is somewhere I want to go to, a place I dream about, a place I love. Each of my paintings has a unique name which emerges through emotions while painting.

My medium is oil on canvas and I prefer soft, delicate monotone colours.

I paint because it gives me great pleasure and provides me with an opportunity to use my God-given talents and develop my skills. I also paint for the fulfillment it brings to be able to create and pray that people will be touched through my paintings.

I also love teaching others and in 2004 started the Bezalel Art School. I especially enjoy the friendship and fellowship in these classes. It is very important to teach my students to develop their own style, and not to compete or copy one another. It is amazing to see them grow and develop into artists in their own right.

I am married to a graphic designer and have two beautiful children."
